FGC Species Plans
Species Plans were published in hard-copy format in FGC’s Annual Business Plans up until 2017/18. These plans included information about the breeding programs, seed orchards and seed use for each seed planning unit (SPU). The Species Plans for 2017/18 are listed below by tree species or species group.
SPUs consisted of a defined geographic area and elevation band for each commercially-important tree species. These SPUs served as the foundation of BC’s tree breeding and seed orchard programs during the 2000’s and 2100’s. They also underpinned the geographic-based seed transfer limits for orchard (Class A) seed described in the Chief Forester’s Standards for Seed Use. See Ministry website for SPU maps and spatial data.
SPUs were assigned a unique number and code. For example SPU#17 Pli BV Low was the SPU for Lodgepole pine (Pli) in the Bulkley Valley (BV) region below 1100 m elevation (Low). SPUs were ranked using a Tree Improvement Investment Model which guided investments in tree breeding and seed orchards.
SPU’s, and subsequently the format of FGC’s Species Plans, became obsolete with the introduction of climate-based seed transfer (CBST) standards in April 2018. These plans were replaced with new CBST-based Tree Seed Planning Dashboards in April 2022.
